Alita Rose, the daughter of John and Alvina (Hoppenworth) Pipho, was born April 7, 1919 in Maxfield Township, Bremer County, Iowa. She was baptized April 27, 1919 by Pastor August Bartels and confirmed April 9, 1933 by Pastor J.G. Bearman at St. John Lutheran Church (Maxfield). She attended Maxfield Township School #3 and graduated from Denver High School in 1937. Alita graduated from Wartburg College in 1939 and taught in the Denver Schools for two years prior to her marriage. Alita was united in marriage with Walter L.H. Poock on June 15, 1941 by Pastor J.G. Bearman at St. John Lutheran Church (Maxfield). The couple farmed in the Readlyn and Tripoli areas until 1949 when they purchased a farm near Sumner, Iowa. They farmed there until 1984 when they moved into the town of Sumner. Walter preceded her in death on September 17, 2002.
Alita’s death occurred Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, from natural causes. She was ninety-one years old. Alita was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sumner and had been active in the Ladies Aid and the Adult Bible Class. She had also been a member of the Pleasant Hill Club. Alita enjoyed being a farm wife and spending time with her family.
Alita is survived by four children, Darwin (Sandra) Poock of Alburnett, Iowa; Virgil (Claudette) Poock of Sumner, Iowa; Junever (George) Heying of Sumner, Iowa; and Randall (Nicole) Poock of Hampton, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; one step great great granddaughter; and one sister-in-law, Isadore Pipho of Denver, Iowa.
Alita was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; two sons, one son who died in infancy, and one son, Myron Poock; one granddaughter, Susan Helin, who died in 2005; her parents; five brothers, Ewald, Herman, John Jr., Ernest, and Henry Pipho; and three sisters, Agnes Pipho, Anna Mueller, and Alma Lehs.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 20, 2010, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Sumner, Iowa. Rev. George Volkert will be the officiant. Interment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery of Sumner Township, rural Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 19, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour before services at the church on Monday. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or to the Hillcrest Home, both in Sumner.
