Calvin Charles Curtis, son of Hugh and Laura Reisner Curtis, was born March 21, 1922, at Hawkeye, Iowa. He graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1941, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, where he served until being discharged in December of 1945. He was confirmed as an adult at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye in 1957.
On December 21, 1961, he was united in marriage with Helen Campbell at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Cal worked for the railroad and retired from John Deere & Company in 1983.
A lifelong Hawkeye resident, Cal’s death occurred on Friday, June 24, 2011, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner, following a long illness. He was eighty-nine years old and had been a member of Arnold-Rogers Post #312, American Legion of Hawkeye and also the Conservation Club. He enjoyed family, hunting, fishing, gardening, and coffee with friends every morning.
In addition to his wife, Helen of Hawkeye, Cal is survived by two sons, Joe and Hugh, both of Hawkeye; one sister, Ruth Pfiester of Oelwein; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Trudy Campbell of Hawkeye; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 27, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. William Horn officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery, rural Hawkeye with military rites by Arnold-Rogers Post #312, American Legion of Hawkeye. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Hauth Park or Trinity Lutheran Church, both in Hawkeye.
