Dorothy E. Henniges Lee

            Dorothy Elizabeth, daughter of Earl and Justina Tegtmeier Webster, was born September 8, 1921, in rural Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized on October 2, 1921, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church in Tripoli, Iowa and was confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sumner, Iowa on April 14, 1935. She attended school at Pinhook through eighth grade and graduated from Sumner High School with the class of 1939.

            On April 30, 1941, she was united in marriage with Edward J. Henniges at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. They farmed for many years southwest of Sumner before moving to Sumner in 1980. They spent winters in Mesa, Arizona until Edward’s death in November of 1990. Dorothy continued to spend the winters in their home in Mesa after Edward’s death.

            She spent many years working at Sumner Pack, McAloon’s Super Value and later at Schemmel’s Super Value before retiring in 1985. She enjoyed gardening and caring for her flowers as outdoor activities, and crocheted and did knitting as inside hobbies.

            On August 28, 1993, Dorothy was united in marriage with Darold W. Lee of Schleswig, Iowa. They spent the next two years wintering in Arizona, and spent summers alternating between Sumner and Schleswig. When Darold passed away on March 18, 2004, she returned to her home in Sumner.

            A resident of the Hillcrest Home in Sumner since March of 2009, Dorothy’s death occurred there on Thursday, November 25, 2010 from natural causes. She was 89 years old and a member of St. John Lutheran Church, and at one time had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

            Dorothy is survived by one son, Kenneth (Janet) Henniges of Sumner, three daughters, Sharon (Kenneth) Kasemeier of Sumner, Joyce (Roger) Dedor of Jesup, and Marilyn (Skip) Koenig of Pensacola, Florida; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one niece and one nephew.

            Further survivors include three step sons, Lowell (Judy) Lee of Schleswig, Loren (Marlene) Lee, also of Schleswig, and Dwayne (Connie) Lee of Charter Oak, Iowa; nine step grandchildren; and eleven step great grandchildren.

            In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; Edmund and Orville Webster; six nephews; two sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

            Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 29, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Dayna Winke officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, November 28, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. The family suggests that memorials may be made in Dorothy’s name to St. John Lutheran Church or Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund, both in Sumner.
