Gladys Elva Anderson was born April 17, 1912 at Lawton, South Dakota to Sylvester and Minnie Smith Bowen. As a young girl, Gladys and her family lived for a short time in New Mexico, Missouri and Minnesota, before moving to Iowa.
Gladys graduated from West Union High School in 1931. She met George Clifford Anderson while taking care of his mother. She married Clifford on April 8, 1934, at the United Methodist Parsonage in Randalia. They built their home in 1948, near Randalia where they lived and farmed. They were married 48 years.
Gladys loved gardening and helped Clifford with the farming and milking cows and enjoyed her dogs. They belonged to the United Methodist Church in Randalia for many years. They enjoyed traveling some after Clifford retired. For several years they lived in Texas during the winter months until Clifford’s health declined. Clifford passed away November 27, 1982, and Gladys continued to live on the home place until August of 2001, when she moved to Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, where her death occurred on Friday, January 7, 2011.
In addition to her husband and parents, Gladys was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Keller and Ethel Jennings; and nephews, Robert, Roy, Art, and David Anderson.
She is survived by one brother-in-law, Donald Jennings of Arlington; three nephews, Duane Jennings of Waterloo, Jim (Nadine) Anderson of Hawkeye, and Earl (Jacquie) Anderson of Hawkeye; five nieces, Donna Jennings of Moline, Illinois, Joyce (Ronald) Seedorff of Arlington, Faye Latta of Winchester, Virginia, Margaret (Jim) Vargason of Weslaco, Texas, and Mavis (Bradley) Kimbrell of Mt. Airy, Georgia; and many great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Randalia with Rev. Robert Shreve officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Wednesday. Interment will follow at Hawkeye Cemetery. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette is in charge of arrangements.
