George Vincent Strub, son of George and Lucy Hollinger Strub, was born May 8, 1927, at Waukon, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at I.C. Catholic Church in Lansing. He attended school at I.C. in Lansing until 6th grade and graduated from Waterville High School in 1945. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947 in Guam, Truk, and Hawaii.
On June 8, 1948, he was united in marriage with Shirley Schlitter at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville. The couple farmed in the Sumner and surrounding areas for a number of years. George worked at Pepsi and Titus in Waterloo, prior to supervising the Bremer County Landfill for fifteen years, retiring in 1992.
Following a brief illness, George’s death occurred early Tuesday morning, November 2, 2010, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. He was 83 years old and a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. He was also a member of Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner where he enjoyed volunteering. He enjoyed carpentry work, collecting toy tractors, TV, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Shirley of Sumner; he is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Randy) Ohrt of Fairbank and Jo (John) Lang of Sumner; one son, Lee (Laura) Strub of New Brighton, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Helen) Strub of Chattanooga, Tennessee; one brother-in-law, Gary (Carole) Schlitter of Phoenix, Arizona; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Schlitter of Vinton.
George was preceded in death by twin daughters, who died in infancy, and his parents.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 5, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Dayna Winke officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner with military rites by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. The family suggests that memorials may be made in George’s name to St. John Lutheran Church, Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion, or Community Memorial Hospital, all in Sumner.
