Helene Marie Bergman, daughter of Anton and Marie Hay Denkinger, was born April 11, 1932, at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was baptized July 17, 1932, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church-Siegel and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1950 and attended Wartburg College.
On October 7, 1951, she was united in marriage with Kenneth H. Bergman at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Helene assisted her husband on the farm which was located north of Sumner.
Following a brief illness, Helene’s death occurred at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner on Monday, February 7, 2011. She was 78 years old and was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church-Richfield. Helene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and also enjoyed puzzle books.
She is survived by two sons, Al (Jo) Bergman of Union, Iowa and Kevin (Marcy) Bergman of Sumner; two daughters, Karen (Scott) Meredith of Hawkeye and Luann (Steve) Connor of Sumner; ten grandchildren, Kyle (Megan) Bergman, Scott (fiancé, Holly Dorenkamp) Bergman, Brett (Liz) Bergman, Zachary Connor, Kayla Bergman, Kelsey Connor, Dylan Bergman, Tyler Connor, Ty Bergman, and Bryce Connor; three great granddaughters, Cameron, Morgan, and Parker Bergman; three brothers, Don (Gayle) Denkinger of Waterloo, Tony (Dodie) Denkinger of Johnston, and Bill (Carole) Denkinger of Sitka, Alaska; and two sisters, Marion Denkinger of Waterloo and Linda (Tom) Parrott of Denver, Iowa.
Helene was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, who died March 19, 2002, and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 11, 2011, at St. Peter Lutheran Church-Richfield in rural Sumner with Rev. Harold Peterson officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Richfield Cemetery in rural Sumner. Memorials may be made in her name to Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund or Sumner/Fredericksburg High School Weight Room Fund.
