Harlan S. "Hank" Engen

            Harlan Stanley Engen, son of Charles and Esther (Landmyer) Engen, was born February 25, 1930, at Madison Township, near Decorah, Iowa. He received his B.A. from the State College of Iowa (which is now UNI) and his M.A. from Southeastern Oklahoma State.

            He was united in marriage with Elizabeth A. Tracy on January 2, 1985, in Waterloo. Hank taught math at East High School in Waterloo from 1962 to 1992.

            A resident of the Hillcrest Home in Sumner since September of 2008, his death occurred there on Wednesday, August 11, 2010. He was 80 years old.

            In addition to his wife, Elizabeth of Sumner, he is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Wilson of Cedar Falls; two step daughters, Susan (Dave) Tiedt of Sumner and Georgann (Steve) Malone of Cannon Falls, Minnesota; three step sons, Carlos Tracy of Sullivan, Wisconsin, Mark Tracy of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and Michael Tracy of Lebanon, Missouri; two grandchildren; ten step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; two brothers, Lee (Marlene) Engen of Cedar Falls and Richard Engen of Central City; two sisters, Betty Haltmeyer of Cedar Rapids and Helen Ramsey of Waterloo; and a sister in law, Nancy Engen of Cedar Rapids.

            He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Engen; and two brothers-in-law, Eugene Haltmeyer and Darrel Ramsey.

            Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Walter Cunningham Educational Fund at East High in Waterloo, or the Hillcrest Home, St. John Lutheran Church, or Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund, all in Sumner.

I was a student of Mr. Engen at East High School ( class of 1970) . He was a very good teacher, as I had him in all 3 years, ( 6 semesters ) of his math classes. ( funny story ). 5 years after graduating I ran into mr. engen at Panther lounge,i was at uni at the time, i tapped him on the shoulder, he turned around,and said Scott how are you..I was a amazed he remembered my name instantly..So sorry for your loss.
