Louis Richard, the son of Richard C. and Minnie (Emerson) Horsley, was born August 12, 1912 in Carrville, Iowa. Louis graduated from Tripoli High School in 1930. During his school years, he participated in football, basketball, and school plays. Louis was united in marriage with Edith Mae (Hillier) Greenlees on March 7, 1948 at the Little Brown church in Nashua, Iowa. She preceded him in death on August 16, 1986. Louis was then united in marriage with Margaret Leap on July 15, 1989 at the Little Brown Church. Louis farmed in the Fredericksburg and Sumner areas, until his retirement in 1977.
Louis’ death occurred Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at the Homestead Hospice Home in Owatonna, Minnesota, from natural causes. He was ninety-seven years old. Louis was a baptized member of the First Baptist Church in Sumner. During his membership he served as Sunday School superintendant and teacher, a deacon, choir director and choir member, soloist, and was a member of the Gideon Society. He also was a singer with the Chandler Senior Citizens in Chandler, Arizona. Louis played slow pitch softball in Sumner until he was seventy years old. He loved to fish, he enjoyed woodworking, and he was an avid sports fan. He recently attended a Minnesota Twins baseball game.
Louis is survived by his wife, Margaret of Boise, Idaho; his daughter, Jan (Ron) Gronseth of Fairibault, Minnesota; his daughter-in-law, Ruby Greenlees, of Tripoli, Iowa; six grandchildren, Brian (Jodi) Buhr of Fairibault, Minnesota; Kim Buhr of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Wallace (Denise) Greenlees of Adel, Iowa; Janelle (Mark) Epperson of Fairfield, Iowa; Wendell Greenlees of Ramsey, Minnesota; and Jacallyne (Bob) Gunzenhauser of Humeston, Iowa; eleven great grandchildren, Ashley Buhr, Claire and Erin Epperson, Jonathan, Violet, Autumn, Garrett, and Rose Greenlees, and Graydon, Madallyn, and Emerson Gunzenhauser; and several nieces an nephews.
Louis was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith; one son, James Greenlees; his parents; two sisters, Helen Marie Horsley, who died in infancy; and Alice Horsley; and one brother, Robert Horsley.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 10, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Sumner with Rev. Bob Burchfield officiating. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 9, 2009, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be made to Homestead Hospice House, Inc. in Owatonna, Minnesota or to the First Baptist Church in Sumner, Iowa.
