Carl G. Hyman

 

            Carl George Hyman, son of George and Lottie Schlatter Hyman, was born December 13, 1917, at Hawkeye, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in his youth at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He later became a member of the Catholic Church in 1973, at Sacred Heart Parish in Oelwein. He attended Bethel #5 School near Hawkeye and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1935.
            On November 24, 1943, he was united in marriage with Geraldine Meighan at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. Carl farmed for many years in the Hawkeye area prior to retiring. In retirement, he worked at H.J. Schult Elevator in Sumner and also helped his son, Jim farm.
            Following a lengthy illness, Carl’s death occurred at his home in Hawkeye on Saturday, March 21, 2009. He was 91 years old and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus in West Union, had been a charter member of the Fayette County Conservation board, and had served on the Hawkeye Community Club board.
            In addition to his wife, Geraldine of Hawkeye, he is survived by two sons, Dale Hyman of Des Moines and Donald (Annette) Hyman of Ft. Dodge; one daughter, Judy (Lowell) Lee of Schleswig; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Hyman of Hawkeye; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
            He was preceded in death by one son, James in 2008; one grandson, Frank in 2005; two infant grandchildren, Lance and Charlotte; and his parents.
             A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2009, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye. A Rosary and Scripture Service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Friends may also call for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday.
