Lorraine Margaret Zubrod Schmitt, daughter of John and Margaret Gebel Zubrod, was born March 22, 1924, on a farm near North Washington, Iowa. Lorraine received her education at the catholic school in North Washington. She then did housework for different families in the community for several years. She later attended the school of cosmetology at the Americana in Des Moines. After graduation, she worked at Vivian’s Beauty Shop in Charles City until her marriage.
She met Mark J. Schmitt at a dance in Alta Vista in 1947. They were married on October 11, 1949, (her parents anniversary) at Immaculate Conception Parish in North Washington. The couple farmed near Marble Rock until 1964, when they moved to the Westgate area. After raising a family of seven children, she worked as a seamstress for City Laundry in Oelwein. In April of 1972, she started a house cleaning business until April of 2007.
Lorraine loved family get togethers and family photos. She enjoyed her angel collection, cleaning house, baking, embroidery, crocheting, and making quilts.
A resident of the Hillcrest Home since March of 2010, her death occurred there on Thursday, October 14, 2010, from natural causes. She was eighty-six years old and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner.
Lorraine is survived by four sons, Roger (Eileen) Schmitt of Oelwein, Russell (Charline) Schmitt of Sumner, David (Cindy) Schmitt of Oelwein, and Daniel (Pamela) Schmitt of Sumner; three daughters, Charlene Henderson of Coconut Beach, Florida, Cheryl (Ron) Reusche of Waverly, and Marjorie (Tim) Lau of Kalispell, Montana; twenty grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two brothers, Veryl (Alice) Zubrod of Cresco and Don (Deanna) Zubrod of Cleghorn, Iowa; and two sisters, Anna Marie Marvin of Nashua and Delores Schatz of Cresco.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark on September 1, 1984; one great granddaughter, Sadie Elizabeth Smith; her parents; one sister, Shirley Holzer; one brother, Reynold Zubrod; and one son-in-law, Craig Henderson.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 18, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Sumner, Iowa with Rev. Jim Brokman officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner. Friends may call from 3:00 until 600 p.m., Sunday, October 17, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner where there will be a Rosary recited at 3:00 p.m. and Scripture Service held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Friends may also call for one hour preceding Mass at the church on Monday.
