Levere William Wenthe, son of John and Lena Perske Wenthe, was born May 13, 1923, near Oran, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington. He attended country schools and graduated from West Union High School in 1941.
On October 10, 1948, he was united in marriage with Marjorie Granger at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. Levere was a carpenter for many years, farmed for a period, and owned and operated Wenthe Carpet and Drapery in Sumner from the 1970’s until retiring in 1990. Levere and Marge have lived in the home he built in Hawkeye for many years, and wintered for ten years in the McAllen, Texas area during retirement.
A resident of the Hillcrest Home in Sumner for about three years, Levere’s death occurred from natural causes this past Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. He was 86 years old. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where at one time he had taught Sunday School. He had been a member of the Sumner Commercial Club, and always enjoyed stock car races, fishing, playing cards and board games, and most especially, spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Marjorie of Hawkeye, he is survived by one daughter, Marlene (Dave) Goss of Waterloo; two sons, Daryl (Patricia) Wenthe of Marion and Dean (Sue) Wenthe of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Todd (Friend, Michelle) Anderson, Amy (Bryon) Howland, Jeff (Katie) Wenthe Jennifer (Senica) Fisher, Allison Wenthe, and Abigail Wenthe; and five great grandchildren, Tyler Anderson, Carson Anderson, Austin Kugler, Payton Howland, and Gracelyn Fisher.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three great grandchildren in infancy; three brothers, Russell, Robert, and Virgil; and one sister, Cleo..
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 1, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. William Horn officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Hawkeye Cemetery.
