Mabel Marie, the daughter of Fred J. and Anna A. (Meier) Tonne was born September 19, 1921 in the Pinhook area, rural Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized in 1921 and confirmed in 1936 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church in Tripoli, Iowa. She attended school in Frederika. Mabel was united in marriage with Edmund Gerhardt Thurm on August 26, 1951 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Edmund preceded her in death on October 3, 1999. The couple lived in Waterloo for many years before moving to a farm near Frederika in 1978.
Mabel’s death occurred Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, after a short illness. She was eighty-nine years old. Mabel was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika. She loved to crochet, embroider, and flower gardening.
Mabel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Ron Luloff of Waterloo, Iowa; two grandchildren, Ruth (Jack J.) Edwards of Waterloo; and Richard Luloff of Waterloo; one great granddaughter, Shantal Edwards; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Piel and Irene Walther, both of Denver, Iowa.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund; her parents; and two brothers-in-law, Bob Piel and Alvin Walther.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika with Rev. Dale Halverson officiating. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 28, 2011, at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be made to the St. John Lutheran Church Building Fund.
