Mildred E. Begalske, daughter of William and Rena Ungerer Fritz, was born January 21, 1914, in Bethel Towhship of rural Fayette County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. She received her education in the rural schools and attended Hawkeye High school.
On December 16, 1937, she was united in marriage with Erwin Begalske. The couple farmed for many years in the Hawkeye area.
A resident of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in West Union for the past two years, Mildred’s death occurred on Friday, October 22, 2010, at Palmer Lutheran Health center in West Union, following a brief illness. She was 96 years old and a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, where she had been active in her church circle. She had also been a member of the Banks Study Club, and very much enjoyed making many quilts over the years.
Mildred is survived by three sons, Rollin (Ardell) Begalske of Cedar Rapids, David (Judy) Begalske of Oelwein, and Arlin (Kathy) Begalske of Sumner; one daughter, Ruth (Allan) Schlatter of Hawkeye; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin in 1990; one son, Milan in1980; four brothers, Alfred, Mervin, Lester, and LeRoy; two sisters, Ella Blume and Wilma Prien; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Begalske; and one great grandchild.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. William Horn officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 25, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be at the Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye. The family suggests that memorials may be made in her name to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in West Union.
