Mary Gertrude Smith, daughter of Charles and Mary Dolmage Knebel, was born May 15, 1930, at New Hampton, Iowa.
On February 19, 1952, she was united in marriage with James F. Smith at Raymond, Iowa. Mr. Smith’s death occurred September 13, 1992.
A longtime Sumner resident, Mary’s death occurred on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette. She was 80 years old.
Mary is survived by five sons, Bill (Lorie) Smith of Sumner, Jim Smith of St. Louis, Missouri, Jeff (Lisa) Smith and Lee (Alicia) Smith, both of Sumner, and Andy (Gayle) Smith of Mason City; eight daughters, Mary (Carlos) Delgado of Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania, Pat (Chuck) Shedek of Cedar Rapids, Theresa (Mike) Voshell and Sharon (John) Orr, both of Fayette, Joyce (Reynold) Erdman of Washburn, Betty (Dave) Meighan and Janet (Darin) Cahoy, both of Sumner, and Karen (fiancé, Robin Leatherman) Smith of Wanchese, North Carolina; twenty-three grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one brother, Leo Knebel of Waterloo.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son; one grandson, Ryan Smith; seven brothers, Ambrose, Elmo, Earl, Ralph, John, Melvin, and Paul; and three sisters, Rita Weber, Edith Lavenz, and Dorothy Jungen.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 26 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Sumner, Iowa. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner. Friends may call from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Church in Sumner where there will be a rosary recited at 2:00 p.m. and Scripture Service at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Friends may also call for one hour preceding Mass at the church on Monday. The family suggests that friends may make memorial contributions in her name to the Heart of Iowa Hospice.
