Miriam Jean Harms, daughter of Paul and Thelma Thull Sorg, was born October 1, 1925 at Sumner, Iowa. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Sumner. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1943 and later attended Iowa State University.
On August 8, 1948, she was united in marriage with Melvin K. Harms at the United Methodist Church in Sumner. Miriam had done medical office work for Dr. Whitmire in Sumner.
Her death occurred on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner from complications of congestive heart failure. She was 83 years old and a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, WELCA, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She enjoyed playing golf, reading, and doing crossword puzzles.
Miriam is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Stanley) Briggs of Waynesville, North Carolina and Becky Read of Sumner; four grandchildren, Andrew (Ashley) Briggs, Kathryn (Jim) Patterson, and Brianna and Brittia Read; one sister, Judy (Eugene) Pfalzgraf of Cedar Falls; one brother-in-law, Cal Harms of Sumner; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Ridge and Helen Harms, both of Sumner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died March 29, 2007; one granddaughter, Theresa Briggs; her parents; one brother, John Paul Sorg; one sister-in-law, Iris Harms; and two brothers-in-law, Wayne Ridge and Myron Harms.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2009, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 15, 2009, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Memorial donations may be made to Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.
