Melvin G. Schultz

Melvin Gustav Schultz, son of John and Theresa (Schultz) Schultz, was born August 9, 1918, at rural Hawkeye, Iowa. He was baptized August 25, 1918, by Pastor L.A. Westenberger and was confirmed July 19, 1931, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He attended rural school and lived on his parents’ farm. As he grew older, his father taught him to farm and be a hard worker. Melvin had many memories of farming with horses and then the tractor. A sad memory in his life was when his mother and father passed away within two days of each other, and a double funeral was held. Melvin continued to live on the farm and retired from farming in 1985.

Melvin married Clara Niewoehner on September 30, 1984, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Richfield. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Wayne Ellingson and Melvin then became a member of that church. On January 11, 2002, Clara passed away and Melvin moved to Sumner. In 2005, he became a resident of the Hillcrest Home in Sumner. His death occurred early Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. He was 92 years old and had been a member of the Senior Citizens Club and enjoyed playing dice. He was a very kind person and loved his family very much.

He is survived by one step daughter, Dorothy (Larry) Bartels of Sumner; one step son, Paul (Doris) Niewoehner of Garner, North Carolina; one step daughter-in-law, Eunice Niewoehner of Fredericksburg; nine step grandchildren; fifteen step great grandchildren; many step great great grandchildren; a sister, Arlene Schlatter of Apple Valley, Minnesota; one niece, Betty Shaaf of Apple Valley, Minnesota; and one nephew, Allan Schlatter of Hawkeye.

In addition to his wife, Clara, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Marvin; and a brother-in-law, Donald Schlatter.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 19, 2010, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Richfield with Rev. Harold Peterson officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. Interment will be at Hawkeye Cemetery.
