Myrna Audrey Sherman, the daughter of Halvor and Bertha (Erickson) Hegland, was born July 5, 1921 near Eldorado, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in Eldorado and rural Ossian, Iowa. Myrna was united in marriage with Roger Sherman on June 9, 1938. To this union one daughter, Sandra, was born. She worked for Elscheimer Meat Products, the Ditto Food Market, and for Dr. Harold Buhman, all in West Union. Myrna and Roger then owned and operated Sherman’s Tap in Hawkeye, Iowa for several years. Myrna became a dietician at the Prairie View Residential Care Facility, near Fayette, until her retirement. After her retirement, she managed the Senior Citizen Housing and an apartment building in West Union for several years. She then busied herself with cleaning her already spotless house and babysitting her beloved great grandchildren.
Myrna’s death occurred Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union, from natural causes. She was eighty-nine years old. Myrna had been a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church in West Union and was currently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. She enjoyed visiting with friends and spending time with her family.
Myrna is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Kenneth) Burkhart of Hawkeye, Iowa; two grandchildren, Alan (Laurie) Burkhart of Hawkeye; and Jan (fiancé, Jim Hauer) Miller of Solon, Iowa; four great grandchildren, Trent and Trevor Blessing and Abby and Ben Burkhart; two step great grandchildren, Sydney and Saige Hauer; and one sister, Marcella Bergeson of Cresco, Iowa.
Myrna was preceded in death by her husband, Roger, who died December 3, 1997; her parents; two brothers, Oberlin and Harris Hegland; two sisters, Agnes Eide and Lois Halverson; and her parents-in-law, Albert and Donna Sherman.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Interment will be held at the West Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heart of Iowa Hospice.
