Lester Friederich, the son of Henry and Minnie (Schlatter) Niewoehner, was born July 18, 1913 in Hawkeye, Iowa. He was baptized August 10, 1913 and confirmed April 1, 1928 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. Lester was united in marriage with Hazel Henniges on November 18, 1936 at the Presbyterian Church in Maynard, Iowa. She preceded him in death on June 5, 1998. Lester and Hazel farmed southwest of Hawkeye for many years. They moved into Hawkeye in 1967.
Lester’s death occurred Sunday, May 24, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in West Union, Iowa, from natural causes. He was ninety-five years old. Lester was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He served on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, the Hawkeye City Council, the Hawkeye Conservation Club and he was a Hawkeye Co-op board member. Lester loved farming, fishing, playing cards, traveling, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His favorite pastime was to drive his pickup around the countryside and “check” the crops.
Lester is survived by his son, Dean (Marilyn) Niewoehner of Hawkeye; two daughters, Jean (Paul) Nuss of Hawkeye; and June (Fred) Ruedy of Naples, Florida; six grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; his parents; and three sisters, Norma Hoeger, Doris Henniges, and Sally Schirmer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, Iowa. Rev. William Horn will be the officiant. Internment will be at the Hawkeye Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
