Robert D. Hanson, son of Helen Hanson, was born May 2, 1928, in Tama County, Iowa. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Buck Creek of rural Sumner and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. He received his education in the country schools near Sumner and the Sumner Public Schools.
On August 17, 1948, he was united in marriage with Rose Britt at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. Bob farmed for many years, did custom work, hog buying, trucking, worked on the highway crew that built highway 93, was a Cornelius Seed Corn dealer, and most recently worked for the Fayette County A.S.C.S office.
A resident of Hawkeye for many years, Bob’s death occurred from natural causes on Monday, August 31, 2009, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was 81 years old and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He had also been a member of the Hawkeye Lions Club, the Hawkeye Volunteer Fire Department, the Hawkeye Cemetery Board, and the Community Club. His hobbies included fishing, playing cards, gambling at the area casinos, and occasionally gambling in Las Vegas.
In addition to his wife, Rose of Hawkeye, he is survived by one daughter, Cheryl (Bill) Koch of Hortonville, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Brent) Liesch of Shiocton, Wisconsin and Larry (fiancé, Alanna Demeny) Koch of Appleton, Wisconsin; one great grandson, Emmett Liesch; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Faye Hanson of Hawkeye; special friends, Daryl and Connie Kasemeier of Sumner; one sister-in-law, Marge Megan of Cedar Falls; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry, who died in 2005; his mother, Helen, who died in 1986; and one uncle, Frank Hanson.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 4, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. William Horn officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Hawkeye Cemetery.
