Regina Arlene Schult, daughter of Richard and Anna Weitenhagen Hehmke, was born May 22, 1919 in Bethel Township of rural Fayette County, Iowa. She was baptized June 29, 1919 by Rev. Westenberger and confirmed June 25, 1933 by Rev. Braun at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. She attended school in Bethel Township and Hawkeye High School.
On May 6, 1940, she was married to Lester Schult at Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. Kraemer. They farmed for twenty-five years, five years northwest of Maynard and twenty years west of Hawkeye. They moved to Hawkeye in 1966. Regina worked in the bank at Hawkeye for two years and was a D.H.I.A. supervisor for five years. Regina operated Ma and Pa’s Place restaurant for eight years, selling the business in 1981. She was an assistant cook at the Hawkeye meal site from 1981 to 1991 at which time she retired. Regina was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, where she taught Sunday school, helped at circle, helped with altar care, baked communion bread, and generally helped wherever she was needed. She also belonged to the Hawkeye Senior Citizens.
Regina’s death occurred early Wednesday morning, August 5, 2009, at her son’s home in Maynard from natural causes. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by one son, Larry (Sandra) Schult of Maynard; three grandsons, Rodney Schult and family of Janesville, Randy Schult and family, also of Janesville, and Timothy Schult and family of Martinsville, Indiana; one great granddaughter, Taylor Schult of Martinsville, Indiana; two step grandchildren, Michael Heinemeyer and family of Maynard and Pamela Lawson and family of Sumner; four step great grandchildren, Jason Funk of Guam, David Funk , Jared Lawson, and Dalton Lawson, all of Sumner; several step great great grandchildren; one sister, Doris Begalske of Ash Flat, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews. and a special friend, Oliver Westpfahl of Hawkeye.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, who died January 6, 1992; her parents; and one sister, Florence Niemann, who died December 28, 2007.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 10, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. William Horn officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Hawkeye Cemetery at Hawkeye, Iowa.
