Stuart C. Gitch

           Stuart Charles Gitch, son of Jerry and Georgia Mikes Gitch, was born November 7, 1964, at Sumner, Iowa. He was baptized December 13, 1964, by Rev. John Mohr and confirmed April 8, 1979, by Rev. John Sorenson, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1983 and Wartburg College in 1987.

            On July 7, 1990, he was united in marriage with Sherri Wedemeier at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Westgate. Stuart has been employed for the past 15 years with Old Dutch Foods.

            His death occurred on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at his home in Sumner. He was 45 years old and a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, where he had recently served as head deacon. He played both football and golf in high school and college, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golf. He was a longtime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and had attended games at both the old and new stadiums. He especially enjoyed attending his children’s events at school and was a friend to all.

            Stuart is survived by his children, Nolan C. and Lauren M., both of Sumner; his parents, Jerry and Georgia Gitch of Sumner; one sister, Kelly (Rick) Gardner of Muscatine; a nephew, Tanner and niece, Molly Gardner; and his former wife, Sherri of Sumner.

            He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Gitch and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Mikes.

            Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 3, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. and Intern Jealaine Marple officiating. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 2, 2010, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. The family suggests that memorials may be made in Stuart’s name to St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.

I just heard the news and my heart goes out to Stuarts family. Stu was my prom date in high school one year. He was always one of those gentle and kind spirits. I know he is missed but we are so blessed to have the promise of seeing him again in the arms of Jesus.

To Stuart's family I saw Stuart every week at the Benders store in Denver. He always had a smile and a little visit. He was very proud of his kids and often showed pictures of them. May God be with you.

Jerry, Georgia and Kelly;

I was sad to hear you lost Stu. It had been years since he and I spent much time together but his name was mentioned often in my house. There are a lot of stories my own children have heard of Stu and I; He is my first best friend and always will be. God bless you and bring you each the comfort you need.

I saw Stuart on a daily basis as I shared parking space at his Old Dutch warehouse. I as the frozen pizza guy would at times trade pizzas for chips with Stuart. I recently fell out of my truck and broke my back. While I was in recovery a card showed up from my Walmart store in Cedar Falls and a bag of my favorite old dutch pickle chips were in the goody bag because Stuart remembered that I liked them. I remember coming into the Hyvee in Cedar Falls last Monday and Stuart was backed up to the dock working away as I entered the back door of the store. He thoughtfully said " Dan. Do you need the dock?" He often put others before himself and was one of the Great Guys in our vending brotherhood. I will miss him and pray for his family as I know he loved them dearly. I`m not surprised that he was a servant for his Heavenly Father as I read in his memorial. My prayers are with all of his loved ones.

I worked with Stuart for his entire career at Old Dutch. We were friends right off. I have enjoyed many rounds of golf with him. When ever we get together for work functions we always would have to sit together. We would talk about our families and he was very proud of his family. Then of course like every year he would try to sell me last years golf clubs. I will greatly miss Stuart and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

As a former employee of Frito-Lay, I worked along side Stewart for the past 10 years. He was good friend and always had a smile; even when you could tell when the day wasn't going quite right for him. I will miss our weekly visits.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Georgia, Jerry, Kelly and the entire family...I'm so sorry to hear of Stuart's passing. As we were growing up, I remember him always tagging along after Kelly and the rest of the kids in the neighborhood. He always wanted to make sure he wasn't missing out on anything. May you think of the fun times and good memories as you celebrate his life. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you during this difficult time.
