Richard V. "Dick" Truog

          Richard Vincent Truog, the son of John “Roy” and Clara (Vanselow) Truog, was born July 27, 1926 in Oelwein, Iowa.  He attended Oelwein Community Schools before enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen.  He served with the Navy during World War II.  Dick was baptized and confirmed on May 16, 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein.  Dick was united in marriage with Betty Steward on September 3, 1949 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein.  Betty preceded him in death on May 17, 2006.  Dick worked for John Deere for a short time, before working for Lagerstrom Plumbing and Heating in Oelwein.  In 1965, Dick and Betty moved to Tripoli, Iowa when he purchased Tripoli Plumbing and Heating.  He owned and operated the shop until his retirement. He then worked for Pinkerton at Netle's in Waverly for ten years and retired again at 80.

           Dick’s death occurred Friday, August 20, 2010 at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, from cancer.  He was eighty-four years old.  Dick was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli and had served on the church council.  He was also a member and past-Post Commander of the Brandenburg-Krueger V.F.W. Post # 4013 in Tripoli.  He loved to fish, hunt, golf, and was still bowling shortly before his illness.

           Dick is survived by one son, Steven (fiancée, Chris) Truog of Waterloo, Iowa; one daughter, Kathy (Barry) Fink of Tripoli, Iowa; two grandsons, Matthew Fink of Tripoli; and Nathan (Nicole) Truog of Waterloo; one great grandson, Trevor N. Troug; two brothers, Roy (Dione) Truog of Oelwein, Iowa; and Don (Joann) Truog of Morrison, Iowa; one sister, Eleanor Truog of Oelwein; and several nieces and nephews.

            Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; one brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Dorothy Truog; and a niece, Karen Handke.

            Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 23, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli with Rev. Miles Renaas officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Garden in Hazleton with military rites by Brandenburg-Krueger V.F.W. Post #4013 of Tripoli. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 22, 2010, at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the church on Monday.
